Becca Katz
Co-Founder & Executive Director
Becca has been a nature-based educator for over two decades. Prior to starting Good Natured Learning, she worked with Lake County School District and Get Outdoors Leadville! to integrate nature-connected learning experiences, retool and design school systems to support learning outdoors, and implement professional development workshops for educators to add nature-based learning practices to their teaching craft. She loves how simple nature-based learning practices – from bringing more plants into your classroom to teaching students in nearby nature – can yield such profound effects like improved wellness and increased engagement. Becca holds a B.A. and M.S. from Stanford University. More important than any degree, Becca has learned from, with, and in nature over hundreds of days-and-nights spent camping and traveling in the Wilderness with students, friends, and family. With GNL, she's excited to focus on how nature connections can be integrated and integral to teaching and learning in schools. Becca adores connecting with people to talk about almost anything, especially about NBL. And, because she always has more words, she writes a newsletter: Learning, by Nature.
Melissa Mathu
Kenya Facilitator & GNL Alumna
Melissa is an experienced educator with over 12 years of teaching children aged 3 to 13. She currently teaches 9–11-year-olds, covering core subjects including Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, and History. A proud alumna of Good Natured Learning, Melissa completed the Teaching Outdoors Workshop in 2024—and hasn’t looked back since. Outdoor learning is now a core part of her weekly teaching practice, with about 90 minutes spent outside each week, primarily focused on Maths and English. In Maths, she uses “nature slides”—question prompts and activities displayed on trees or the ground—to create interactive learning trails. Her English classes often take their reading outdoors, where a bent tree shaped by recent rains has become a favorite learning spot. Melissa has seen firsthand how outdoor learning boosts student engagement, enthusiasm, and focus, and she encourages every teacher to explore the benefits of teaching outside.

Mike Muñoz
Member of the Board
Mike is a Denver native who rediscovered life on Colorado’s Western Slope. In 2016, his family moved from the city to rural Colorado, where they learned to fly fish and navigate a stretch of the Gunnison River. This opportunity opened Mike’s eyes to the magic of being outdoors and forged genuine love for “his river.”
As a teacher for 25 years, Mike has always prioritized what’s best for students. He has found that genuine connection is key and his mentor’s words guide his practice: “Kids don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
Mike, an alumnus from Good Natured Learning’s Teaching Fellowship, credits the Fellowship for being able to reach more students through integrating nature-based learning into his teaching. For Mike, spending time outside with students has supported stronger connections, especially as they see his own passion for nature. Stepping outdoors breaks the routine and fosters a deeper bond than in the classroom.
Mike hopes to inspire more students and teachers to get outside. Nature, when given time, can teach more than any curriculum.

More than anything, though, he loves coffee, pizza and strawberry shortcake. Not together but… well now as he’s typing this he wonders…

His past experiences include teaching and consultancy work with George Mason University, Fairfax County Public Schools, the Denver Center, the AmeriCorps, Google, Chipotle, Greylock Partners, True Ventures, and throughout the photography industry.
